Anna Haskel, a German national, was born in North Bohemia. The daughter of a farmer, her parents died young, and she had to manage the household from the age of 12. Married at 20, her husband died three years later. This event led her to an unwavering belief in God. She felt a need to paint. Whenever she found a free moment, she drew. In the evenings, she would draw until late while listening to the radio.

She describes this need to draw using the terms "mindfulness" and the absence of a need for "concentration." She emphasizes one particular point: "I feel my hand guided by a higher power."
