Gretzinger

1942 - United States

Contemporaries

Jerry drew the first element of a map of an imaginary world that would become his life's work in 1963. Each day, this drawing was augmented, expanding a world and sketching the physiognomy of an unknown land, giving rise to cities such as "Plaeides" and "Ukrainia."

Fifty years later, the cartographer is still working on this same document, which has metamorphosed into a space comprised of nearly three thousand maps. Every morning, Jerry draws a card from a deck he created. It indicates the transformation he must make: add a building, remove roads, create wasteland.

The world he maps is born from the development of the map itself, through the layering of sedimented elements on the paper. His work, in perpetual metamorphosis, takes us to imaginary lands. Jerry's maps invite us to inhabit the world poetically.

Jerry Gretzinger's work has recently joined the Art Brut section of the LaM museum in Villeneuve d'Ascq.
