Nick Blinko is an artist and singer in the punk band Rudimentary Peni. His drawings represent his struggle with his inner demons: “My initial intention was to try to represent melancholy… I was frustrated by attempts to realistically depict suicidal depression, and I went further and further into the details.” Blinko’s work is teeming with microscopic patterns that he draws without the aid of magnifying lenses. Hundreds of figures and faces meet and interconnect to form a labyrinthine cosmogony.
Blinko balances a drawing board on his knees and, using the finest pens, obsessively creates the most complex and original patterns.
He often looks back on his time in institutions with bitterness and harbors a paradoxical feeling: if he submitted to medication, his concentration decreased, and his brain, hands, and eyes could not create, while the periods without care that caused his psychic torments and delusions gave him a creative fever.
