Groul

1888 - 1975 / Czechoslovakia

Czechs

A men's tailor, Vaclav Groul claimed to be involved with spiritualist movements. He would stop sewing when summoned by spirits and begin creating directly on his sewing machine. His haunting mandalas, executed in tempera on wooden panels or cardboard, always exhibit a symmetrical geometric structure. His works were rediscovered in 2000. His work was shown at the Halle Saint-Pierre during the "Czech Art Brut" exhibition in 2002.
